Alicante Mayor arranging urgent meeting with Ikea

The Partido Popular Mayor of Alicante, Sonia Castedo, hopes to hold an urgent meeting with Ikea this week, Diario Información reports, after the news that the Valencia High Court has halted the plan to develop a 4 million square metre site to the north of the city. The development under the Plan Rabasa includes 13,500 new homes and what would be one of Ikea’s largest centres in Europe.

The High Court is concerned about water supply to the massive development and, while both its promoter, Enrique Ortiz, and Alicante City Hall plan to place appeals against the halt order, it’s understood that the final court ruling on the Plan Rabasa may not come through for at least another two years.

Alternative sites could now be under consideration to allow the Ikea store to go ahead. One which has been put forward by Información is in the Rabasa district near the original planned site, but is outside the area covered by the Plan Rabasa. It’s the site where the Christmas Feria is held, currently under private ownership, and which the paper notes would meet the conditions required by Ikea.
