Some 300 municipal staff began a sit-in at the Town Hall in Alcoy on Monday against the local government’s decision to sack nine workers, saying they will remain there until Wednesday afternoon. A council meeting is due to take place at 6pm on Wednesday to approve the 2010 municipal budget, and it’s understood the protesters plan to present a motion at the meeting against the cutbacks in staff.
La Verdad newspaper reports that an additional 27 positions which are currently vacant will also go as part of the cutbacks. Other measures include the suspension of additional employers’ contributions covering matters such as health and pensions.
A demonstration is planned in Alcoy’s Plaza de España prior to the meeting, and as another protest measure, the staff have announced that they will return to the Mayor the Christmas cards they have all been sent this year.
