El Mundo today
El País has the number 78,294 written large and says that Madrid robbed millions as the city won both first and second prizes.
El Mundo headlines that the leader of the employers’ organisation, CEOE, Gerardo Díaz Ferrán, is sinking, but his workers have won El Gordo. The paper contrasts two front page photos – protesting workers from Air Comet on the one hand and celebrating workers from Marsans on the other, showing their winning tickets to the camera. They share out 260 million between them.
Público considers that lady luck has favoured the needy and says the Gordo landed in the working class areas of Madrid and Getafe.
La Razón says that the lottery gave more than 800 million € in prizes to the capital.
ABC has Oscar’s story – he won his third Gordo lottery yesterday. He won in 1995, again in 1996 and picked up 2.4 million € yesterday.
El Mundo notes that the Ministry for Development has withdrawn the licence to fly from Air Comet and is to fine the company 4.5 million. The CEOE continues to support Díaz Ferrán and the Partido Popular say they are supporting him because now ‘it’s not frequent’ to have business success.
Público headlines that Díaz Ferrán left 7,000 travellers stranded, while ABC notes that the company has sold 100,000 tickets still to be used.
El País says that Air Comet has dumped thousands of travellers and 640 workers, and notes that the Ministry for Development is chartering planes to rescue the affected passengers.
La Razón says that Al Qaeda has now put a price on the lives of the three Spanish aid workers who were kidnapped in Mauritania.
El Mundo notes that the President of Unió Mallorquina has resigned after the judge took away his passport as corruption investigations continue on Mallorca.
Very few front page international stories today, but El País reports that hitmen have killed the family of a soldier following the death of a Mexican drug runner. The soldier’s mother, two brothers and aunt were shot dead in the family home.
La Razón notes the new CIS survey which shows politicians as the third most important problem for the Spanish, noting too that Congress has started its Christmas holidays.
ABC highlights that eight out of ten Spaniards are living under the worry of unemployment.
El País tells us that the Social Security is giving monetary prizes to doctors who take off less time in sick leave. It’s part of their battle against abuse by workers, spending 30 million on ‘rationalising’ costs.
El Mundo notes the controversy over the broadcast of a Big Brother in Spain where children are the residents.
El País notes that Spanish cinema fears for its future following the court ruling against it collecting a 5% canon from TV companies. ‘Without the TV money we will not survive’.
El País says that Lorca will have to wait, saying that the Junta de Andalucía has closed down the search for his grave for now.
And finally,
La Razón highlights the increased life expectancy in Spain, with men living on average to 77 and women 84.
