Time is running out for the chiringuitos of Valencia City, which, on the beaches of El Saler and Pinedo, must on 1st January 2010 drastically reduce the size of their terraces or face a hefty fine from the Coastal Authority under the Coastal Law ‘Ley de Costas’. It’s understood from Público that the fine for failing to comply with the law will be 60 € a day for every square metre which exceeds a maximum size of 50 square metres, an area which the sector says is simply too small to allow them to make a profit.
The owners announced last week that they have no option other than to close their terraces down if no last minute agreement is reached as the deadline approaches. A joint manifesto was to be read out on Monday asking for all political parties to unite in defence of the chiringuitos and of the workers’ jobs.
ABC newspaper said the measure will be applied to the chiringuitos on Valencia’s paseo maritímo from 1st July.
