smallerBy h.b. - Jan 21, 2010 - 7:41 AMIt's thought to have been the longest hold up seen in the cityAn accident involving a lorry with a dangerous cargo brought chaos to Alicante on Wednesday.
The vehicle was carrying barrels and containers of corrosive and inflammable chemicals and caught fire at 5am on the A70 at Villafranqueza, direction Valencia. The fire and then an extensive clean up operation resulted in the closure of the road for a total of 12 hours, and a monumental hold up on the ring road with queues of traffic reaching 12 kilometres at their height.
The lorry driver was not hurt, but two accidents were caused on the other side of the carriageway, resulting in three people being slightly injured.
Nobody in the Traffico Guardia can remember such delays in Alicante.
