Red Palm Weevil - Photo Wikipedia
One in 11 palm trees in Orihuela is now reported to be infected by the Red Palm Weevil. More than 2,000 of the 25,000 local trees are now dying, including a third of those in the Rio Segura ‘green corridor’. The river flows down to La Manga del Mar Menor in Murcia, where most of the palms attacked are Canary Island Phoenix Palms. Here the authorities said a year ago that 2% of trees were affected, that number has now quadrupled.
Meanwhile in Elche, famous for its UNESCO Heritage of Mankind palms, the Via Parque between the town and Alicante, is now barren with the palms removed from the roadside. Here a lack of water has resulted in the palms dying and the row over the responsibility continues between the Town Hall and the Valencia Generalitat regional government.
