The Ministry for Employment and Immigration issued only 158 work and residence permits to non-EU immigrants in Alicante province over the third quarter of last year, as the recession continued to bite.
It means the non-EU immigrant population of the province has stopped increasing and stabilised at 112,270 after previous increases of about 2,000 every three months.
The numbers are also reflected across the country with some regions even seeing a fall in the number of the immigrant population as more are forced to return to the countries of origin given the lack of work here. In Barcelona for example there are now 2,048 fewer immigrants with residency than in the previous quarter. A fall was also seen in Sevilla.
