A 21 year old Spanish soldier of Colombian origin, named as John Felipe Romero, has been killed and another six have been injured in an explosion in Afghanistan.
It happened in Qala-i-Naw, in the north of the country, as the Spanish soldiers were escorting a food convoy which was part of the World Food Program. The area has seen previous similar attacks.
Spanish soldiers are reported to have killed three Taliban after the attack.
The dead man lived in Mollet del Vallès,
John Felipe Romero Meneses
near Barcelona and lost his life when the convoy crossed over an anti-tank mine, described by defence sources as being very powerful. He was travelling in a BMR armoured vehicle. His death takes the total number of Spanish soldiers to lose their lives in Afghanistan to 90, since troops were sent there in January 2002.
Spain currently has 1,068 soldiers stationed in the country, most of them from the JACA, Mountain Troops division. Spanish Defence Minister, Carme Chacón has said that she will be travelling again to Afghanistan as a result of the latest fatality.
