Part of the recreation of the French invasion on Saturday - EFE
Two centuries after Napoleonic troops invaded Chiclana, on December 7 1810, the local residents have been re-living the event.
On Saturday the invasion was recreated in the form of dress, weapons and gunpowder from the period.
Members of the Valencia Association of Friends from the Military History Museum travelled to the town to show off their uniforms and arms based on those worn and carried by the French infantry troops in 1811 and 1812.
As they paraded down the central street, locals shouted ‘Fuera! Fuera! – Out! Out!’
The recreation used gunpowder and staged fights, but in fact the invasion 200 years ago was pacific, as 6,000 soldiers arrived and almost doubled the then population of the town. The French remained in the town for 30 months until August 1812 when the Battle of Chiclana saw the start of the rebellion by some locals, while others chose to leave.
