It has been revealed that Basque Terrorists ETA had assembled as much as 1.5 tons of explosives at their safe house in the Portuguese tourist resort of Óbidos in Portugal.
The amount was given by the Spanish Interior Ministry, although the Portuguese authorities have spoken of 800 kilos.
Documentation found at the house indicated that they were planning terrorist attacks in both Cádiz and Madrid.
It’s the largest ETA explosives haul found by the authorities since the bomb factory uncovered in Cahors, France, ten years ago.
The Portuguese police spent Saturday searching the property and found 1,330 kilos of Ammonium Nitrate, 75 kilos of Potassium Nitrate, and 40 litres of Sulphuric Acid among other material and 240 kilos of explosives primed to explode.
In their haste to abandon the house the terrorists left behind two lap-top computers and three mobile phones which are now being analysed and a search is underway for the two men thought to be Andoni Cengotitabengoa and Oier Gómez.
The first was identified by an I.D. card found in the house with two fake driving licences with his photo, while the second had been identified by security camera footage from a local supermarket.
