National Police have arrested 34 members of an international gang, which was controlled by a single family which forced women and children into crime, usually burglaries. It was the second phase of the so-called ‘Yugoslavia Operation’ which saw another 67 arrests and the recovery of 20 kilos of jewellery last June.
The new investigation uncovered 45 children living in conditions of poverty as eleven searches were carried out. Police say the operation uncovered criminal links to other countries such as Portugal, Italy and some countries in Eastern Europe.
An amount of jewellery was recovered over the day along with a large amount of documentation and some computer material. The gang used women to break into property, while guards were placed outside to warn of any arrivals, and cars were supplied by the group which organised the getaway after the theft.
The arrests include some people whose role was to buy some of the stolen goods.
