Público today
El Mundo leads with the headline that Salgado has asked for help from those who Blanco has called ‘speculators’.
The paper indicates that while the Minister for Tax and the Economy was promising the City of London ‘more spending cuts’, the Minister for Development was speaking of ‘turbulent movements to avoid regulation of the markets’. El Mundo notes that the Prime Minister has been obliged to appear in Congress to explain.
ABC notes that the Government considers there has been a conspiracy in the markets against their economic management, with José Blanco speaking of a campaign to ‘demonise and destroy’ Zapatero.
La Razón headlines that the Government is hiding behind the claims of an ‘orchestrated campaign’ against Spain. The paper says the Financial Times considers the comments to be paranoid, while La Razón also prints graphs to show the numbers of broke families and the rising unemployment rate.
Público says that speculators have spent 7.6 billion dollars betting against the Euro. It notes that just hours after calling the Spanish government paranoid, it gave details of the operation launched last week against the currency.
ABC notes that the Minister for Tax and the Economy is selling a reduction of the deficit from 11% to 3% outside the country, and was in London in an attempt to quieten the market.
El País notes that Elena Salgado promised the markets even more cuts if the deficit does not fall, and notes that Zapatero has denounced the ‘speculative attacks against the Euro’. The paper says the PSOE Socialist Party is demanding the Prime Minister be firmer.
El Mundo notes that there has been a pre-agreement between employers and unions for a 1% wage rise today. The paper notes the deal will affect 12 million workers, and that wages could rise by 2.5% in 2012.
El País also has the wage deal, upto 1% this year, between 1% and 2% next year and between 1.5% and 2.5% in 2012.
La Razón has a photo of the empty Congress, which has been holding its 48 day long Christmas holiday, and notes that the CiU Catalan party has offered him a pact to keep stability to his minority Government going.
Público leads with news of the pact, and the Government has asked the CiU for details of their offer. The paper notes that the PP think there is a ‘national emergency’ but they continue to keep their anti-recession plans in secret.
ABC manages to get a front page photo from the pensioners home fire in Sevilla overnight where six people died. It shows two firemen carrying one woman out of the building sat in a plastic chair. The paper says that there are also three serious injuries.
El País reports that the President of the Baleares ordered the sacking of 200 positions which his UM previous partners in Government had named ‘a dedo’.
The paper describes it as a purge against corruption in the three main institutions on the islands.

El Mundo notes that the Ministry for the Interior has called on the Police to expel more illegal immigrants from the country, and to get on with it as soon as possible.
La Razón notes that the Ministry for Health has not managed to reduce the number of smokers in Spain since 2006. The paper says the data from the Epidemiology Society contradict those of the Ministry.
El País notes that President Sarkozty has proposed a contract ‘to be a French Citizen’. They will have to sign a document of undertakings, know the language and also follow the laws of the republic.
Many of the papers note the involuntary homicide charge placed against Michael Jackson’s doctor. The accused is placed on the header of El Mundo today.
El País notes that the USA and Europe are putting the last details on sanctions against Tehran because of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Público notes that a witness has said in court in Italy that Berlusconi’s party has reached an agreement with the Mafia. Berlusconi’s lawyer has announced legal action against the claim.
