King Juan Carlos is in the Lebanon on his first official visit to the country, and where he met on Monday night with President Michel Suleiman. He was welcomed at Beirut Airport by the President, accompanied by his Foreign and Defence Minister, as well as the Commander in Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces.
After a gala dinner last night where King Juan Carlos toasted for peace, the Spanish Monarch has moved on today to the ‘Miguel de Cervantes’ Spanish base to visit the 1,050 troops stationed there whose job it is to bring stability to the zone as part of the United Nations mission under the command of General Alberto Asarta.
The King had ‘an emotional remembrance’ for the eight Spanish soldiers who have died during the mission which has been in the Lebanon for three years so far.
Minister for Defence, Carme Chacón, was with the King on the visit to the base.
