Santa Cruz de Tenerife has her new carnival queen. Alicia San Juan McNutty was elected in the early hours of this morning with her costume ‘In the country of wonderland’, a huge design of golden masks and blue feathers, marking the second consecutive win for designer Leo Martínez.

The title of Gran Dama at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria carnival went meanwhile to Irma Asensio Herrera, after a two hour television programme to choose the winner.

This weekend sees carnival celebrations in many towns and villages across Spain. Banned during the Franco years, Carnaval is now undergoing a new popularity
