There is concern following the damages to the Costa del Sol beaches in the recent rains and storms that they will not be ready for Easter.

Many beaches are covered in large amounts of flotsam and jetsam, even including dead animals in some places. The Guadalmar beach has the bodies of pigs and sheep which were washed down the Guadalhorce river.

Norberto del Castillo, the President of the Andalucian Federation of Beach Businessmen has said there is not time for a complete clean up. He observed to El Mundo that it was the same every year with an enormous amount of money being spent in response to the storms, when breakwaters are needed to be built to regain equilibrium along the coasts.

The one good thing from all the storms is that sand has been brought down the rivers to the beaches.

Most affected beaches on the Costa del Sol are reported to be those in Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Torrox.

Breaking news: The Government has approved an urgent plan with the Junta de Andalucía to try and get the beaches of the Costa del Sol ready for Easter, and following the damage done by the Levante winds.

President of the Junta de Andalucía, José Antonio Griñán, met on Tuesday with the Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, to announce the measure, with central government paying 50% of the costs.
