Spanish aid worker set to be released in Mauritania

Alicia Gárcia is expected to be free in the next few hours

El Mundo is reporting that one of the three Catalan aid workers who was kidnapped over three months ago in Mauritania is to be released later today. The paper quotes sources close to the negotiations with Al Qaeda, and says that Alicia Gárcia, the one woman to be taken, will be released along with an Italian hostage, Filomena Kaouburee.

Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, has been in contact with the three families to bring them upto date on the new developments.

A ransom of 5 million € had been demanded for the release of the three, but last weekend new demands for the release of Islamic prisoners held in Mauritania was reportedly added to the demands, although this was described by the Spanish Government as ‘a rumour’.
