Madrid City Hall has announced plans to lower the speed limit in certain streets and neighbourhoods in the capital down to 30 kms/hour.

The ‘Zona 30’ plan will be introduced close to schools, hospitals and cultural centres, with the intention of reducing traffic noise and acoustic pollution.

Already there are some streets with a 30km/hour limit, but this new plan will see whole ‘manzanas’ with the lower speed. New low-noise road surfaces are also being studied.

The exact areas to be affected are still being defined, and the City Hall says that once the scheme is in place they will be using more radars to ensure that the new limit is adhered to.
