The Junta de Andalucía has said that the beaches of the Costa del Sol will be ready for the tourists at Easter. The Tourism Department of the regional government is spending 709,000 € on recovering and restoring the beaches, an amount larger than last year, and more money is going too on flood prevention.
The Junta says it wants to learn a lesson from the winter’s prolonged rain.
Central government has also made 150 million € available for the cleaning of the beaches. Regional head for tourism, Luciano Alonso, highlighted the ‘rapid response’ from the Government and the Junta, and said efforts would be concentrated on the 37 beaches most affected by the storms.
The Junta is using Holy Week and the processions in a new campaign to attract visitors. It goes under the slogan – ‘Live the passion of Andalucía, and the target is to beat the 740,000 visitors who came to the region last Easter.
Meanwhile at a meeting in Sevilla City Hall on Friday it was announced that central government is to spend 456 million € repairing the damage of the storms, 150 million will go to the beaches while the rest will go on agriculture and infrastructure.
The amount includes funds to help those affected by wildfires at the end of 2009.
