Two companies have been given permission to search during the next six years for gas across 82,000 hectares of both land and sea in seven municipalities in Cádiz. Studies in the area conclude that the chances of finding gas are as high as 99%; the only unknown is the quality and quantity of the fields.
Schuepbach Energy España has obtained 85% of the search rights and Vancast Exploration the remaining 15%, and
El País reports that the Ministry for Industry will give the final green light in the next week or so.
The search areas are in the shape of two rectangles, the largest is the size of 62,000 football pitches across the municipalities of Tarifa, Barbate, Vejer, Medina, Benalup, Alcalá de los Gazules and Los Barrios. The offshore section runs from Barbate to Punta Camarinal in Tarifa. The smaller rectangle lies to the East and covers Los Barrios and Tarifa.
