A Congress on Migratory Birds and Climate Change attracted 200 scientists to Algeciras

Climate change is disorienting migratory birds, with routes and dates both affected. The change is having a knock-on effect on the reproductive cycle of certain species some of which are now in danger of extinction.
That was the conclusion of the II Congress on Migratory Birds and Climate Change which ended in Algeciras on Saturday.

Some 200 international scientists attended the event, and looked at the effects of climate on some 20 billion migratory birds. President of Migres, the foundation which organised the event, Miguel Ferrer, said that the motor of biodiversity is also under threat, while British expert ornithologist, Ian Newton, of Oxford University, said that there was scientific evidence that many species had brought forward their migration dates in response to the higher temperatures, and this had led to far fewer chicks being hatched.

In some cases, such as the European Pied Flycatcher, an alarming fall in numbers had resulted as the chicks were being born early when there were no insects to nourish them. Other species had been recorded heading further north than before because of the milder conditions.
