Tuesday March 30th 2010 marks the 130th birthday of the Delicias railway station in Madrid. The oldest railway building in Madrid is now home to the Railway Museum, but its platforms are famous for the many films shot there, including Doctor Zhivago in 1965.
It closed its platforms to trains back in 1969, when on June 30th all the locals turned out to see the last train depart, and it was not until 1984 that the Railway Museum brought life back to the building.
Inaugurated in 1880 by King Alfonso XII, it was the departure point for those travelling from the Spanish capital to Lisbon. It’s two years old than the other great Madrid station, Atocha, as 12 years older than Prínciple Pio.
Later it because used greatly for freight transport.
It’s iron structure was designed by three Spanish engineers, headed by the architect, Emile Cachelievre, and was partially built in the French workshops at Estación d’Orsey in Paris.
Curiously nobody is sure why it is called ‘Estacion de Delicias’, except many say the local area was said to be known by the same name.
