Works to build the AVE high speed train line between Antequera and Granada are being blamed for a chemical pollution in the area.

The Arroyo de la Viñuela-Quejigares, near Loja, has been contaminated by a frothy lubricant which is used in the tunneling process, and the pollutant has reached the Salado River. The 3.3km long Quejigares tunnel is the problem.

An investigation by SEPRONA, the Guardia Civil Environmental wing has concluded that water quality has been affected in the area and among the businesses affected are the caviar producers at Riofrio.
The manager there, Diego Pozas, told El País that the pollution amounted to ‘economic bankruptcy’ following the order to isolate his facilities, which effectively stops their normal functioning.

The first alerts to the problem were made in December, and one local farmer has said that 50 of his goats have died, and others are aborting their young.

The PP has claimed that the environmental impact report for the AVE construction in the Sierra de Loja is not been adhered to. They have asked for a statement in Congress from the Development Minister, José Blanco, on the matter.
