The Junta de Andalucía has said it will fine, by upto 30,000 €, a construction company which has been deemed responsible for pollution affecting the water course between Málaga and Granada provinces.
The problems have arisen from a lubricant used during the boring of the 3.3km tunnel for the AVE high speed train at Quejigares near Loja, and now work has been halted at the site while a full investigation into the environmental damage is carried out.
Meanwhile the Ministry for Development has said that controls by the company Dragados-Tesca and the state railway infrastructure company ADIF, have not shown products at any time which could damage the environment, and that the lubricants used in the tunnel are biodegradable and in common use in such work.
