Eight people have been arrested in Lanzarote in connection with new allegations of real estate corruption. The case has been named ‘Operación Jable’, and among those detained is the Ex Mayor of Arrecife, María Isabel Déniz, from the Coalición Canaria party. They are facing charges of bribery, influence peddling, and activities prohibited for public civil servants.
Also arrested are the ex Socialist Councillor, Miguel Ángel Leal, a municipal technician, another worker from the Town Hall, and several businessmen including the manager of a branch of the Caja de Canarias, Julio Romero, and the managers of the Urbaser company, Jacinto Álvarez and Stephani Jean Valverde. The ex head of the tourist board, Asolan, Francisco Javier Armas, is also being held.
The case can be considered to be a new part of the ‘Operación Union’ which broke in May last year and brings the total number of those arrested to more than 20.
