Two of the most shocking cases on the Canary Islands could be related; the disappearance of seven year old Yéremi Vargas, the child who vanished in March 2007, and the so-called Karate case, where Fernando Torres Baena, who worked as a Karate instructor, is facing charges of sexually abusing some of the youngsters who attended his gymnasium. 55 of his customers have alleged sexual abuse, 17 of them aged between 13 and 17.
A link is being considered because Yeremi attended Karati classes, given by a monitor who had allegedly taken part in orgies organised by Baena, although the Guardia Civil is officially saying there is no relation between the cases. Reports indicate Yeremi even had a martial arts class the day before he went missing.
The Police on the islands has declined to comment on reports that a search for Yeremi’s body is underway at the chalet belonging to Fernando Torres Baena, but Government Delegate, Carlonina Darias, warned that such speculation was ‘irresponsible’, and noted that reporting restrictions remain in force in the Karate case.
