Two new hotels are threatening two of the remaining unspoilt sections of the Andalucía coastline, with the Supreme Court ruling that a hotel can be built next to the salt flats at Cabo de Gata in Almería, and two hotels planned for just 500m from the El Palmar beach in Vejer de la Frontera in Cádiz.
In Cádiz more than 67,000 people have signed a petition against the holiday complex, but it has the support of the local Town Hall and the Junta de Andalucía, despite the fact it will completely change the character of the town which has a population of just 13,000.
In the Cabo de Gata, the Junta de Andalucía has lost a legal battle against a licence for the hotel which has lasted for the last 11 years when the then Socialist Town Hall, led by Joaquín García, granted a licence to the Círculo Agroambiental company. The project is for a 50 room hotel on a 3,000 square metre site. It too has been attacked by local ecologists.
