100 skeletons, thought to be of French soldiers dating from 200 years ago, have been found in Vitoria.
The bones were spread across six mass graves and left at successive different levels. Documents dating from the time of the War of Independence report on the fighting in the city at the end of the 18th century and start of the 19th, and a document dating from 1823 in the municipal archive talks of an old French cemetery between the Plaza de los Fueros and Calle San Prudencio.
The site was uncovered on June 14 as ground was being prepared for the construction of a new building on the corner of the two streets.
Archaeologists are now working at the site to unearth the bones, and have so far recovered over 100 skeletons, but expect to find many more. However the strange thing so far is that there is no evidence as yet that the people met their death in combat.
