A new service will link to Ceuta in seven minutes

The Minister for Development, José Blanco, opened the new heliport in Algeciras on Thursday. The Government has invested seven million € in the project which now links the town to Ceuta in just seven minutes and which is expected to be used by more than 22,000 people a year.

The Minister said that the helicopter route would ‘unite two sister cities’ and benefit tourism and improve emergency resources.

11 jobs have been created at the heliport and the Inaer company will offer upto 41 flights a week between 9am and 6pm. Tickets cost 50 € plus taxes one way, 80 € return, with a 50% discount for residents of Ceuta. Services start on July 15.

Meanwhile also in Algeciras, the year’s ‘Operación Paso del Estrecho’ is now underway, earlier than usual because of the date of Ramadan. Some 10,000 vehicles are expected to cross the Strait back to Morocco this weekend, and an estimated 40,000 vehicles and 200,000 people have already made the crossing.
