The PP President of the Murcia region, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, has done a U-turn on the new abortion law, and, following pressure from his party in Madrid, said that he will allow the law to be applied in the Murcia region. In a statement on Wednesday he said,

‘There are laws which I like a lot, others for which I am indifferent and other which I like less, but I always follow them’.

Notwithstanding the PP has challenged the legislation in the Constitutional Court, and had called on the chamber to put a temporary halt on the same while they debate the matter. However the General Council for Judicial Power has said that the law stands until there is a decision from the Constitutional Court.

Under the law, every woman who is considering having the procedure will receive a closed envelope containing all the information on help available and the technique of the operation. After that date the woman has three days to decide, and she will no longer have to give any justification for her decision to the doctors provided she is within the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The procedure can take place up to the 22nd week only if there is a serious malformation of the foetus or illness in the mother.
Women aged 16 and 17 who want to abort can do so in the company of their parents, and not alone, except in the cases where there is proven family conflict.
