The Canary Islands, Cabildo, Government has made an official complaint to the British Government for ‘irreparable damage done to the island of Lanzarote by a report in Tuesday’s Financial Times newspaper. The paper spoke of the possibility that UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve categorisation could be lost because of the construction of illegal hotels on the coast.

The paper also claimed that it was the concession of grants from the European Union which had helped in the construction of several of these establishments, the licences for which had been annulled in the courts.

The complaint from the Canaries has been sent to the British Embassy in Madrid and another letter has been sent to the Financial Times demanding an apology for the report.

President of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, said the reports in the F.T. were ‘tremendously unjust’ noting that with the island surviving almost exclusively on tourism there was however ‘minimal’ occupation on the coast.
