Queen Sofía travelled to Burgos on Tuesday to open the new four storey Museum of Human Evolution which has been established in the city.
She was joined by the President of the Junta de Castilla y León, Juan Vicente Herrera, the architect of the building, Juan Navarro, and the director of the Atapuerca System, Javier Vicente. The Atapuerca System includes all the Ataouerca digs and information centres and also has its headquarters in Burgos.
Among the attractions of the museum, which has cost about 70 million € to set up, are the original first fossils to be found at the nearby Atapuerca site. Darwin has his place here, of course, as visitors travel through the evolution of mankind.
The new museum will be free to the public until July 25. In general it will open 10,30 – 14,30 on working days, and from 10am to 8pm on Sundays and fiestas. In common with most museums in Spain it will be closed on Mondays.
