Digital music sales now represent 26% of the market in Spain, but the global music sales in the country were down 12.3% over the first six months of the year compared to last because of the decline in the physical market of CD’s.
21.3% fewer CDs were sold in the first half of this year compared to last, a total of 57.1 million compared to 76.9 million.
Music producers note this is the ninth consecutive fall in sales, although they welcome the 29.5% increase in the digital market which was worth 19.85million € for the six months.
The numbers come in a report from Promusicae, the Music Producers of Spain.
Their president, Antonio Guisola, called for immediate measures to lessen the permanent exploitation of the music industry in Spain which he said was in crisis and losing jobs. He highlighted content which is freely circulating on the internet without any type of protection, and said that Spain’s culture, productivity, international image and talent was all being damaged.
