The Partido Popular Mayor of La Línea, Alejandro Sánchez, has said that La Linea does not want to be a problem for Spain’s relations with Gibraltar.
The Mayor met in Madrid on Wednesday with the Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, just two days after he suggested a toll be charged for access to Gibraltar from Spain.
A statement from La Linea Town Hall said that the Mayor had argued in Madrid that ‘the residents of La Linea have the right to the same economic progress as its Gibraltar neighbours and friends’.
A statement from the Foreign Ministry said that several questions of common interest had been debated in the meeting, and the Ministry underlined its firm commitment to continue with the three-way forums for the benefit of the interests of the residents of the Campo de Gibraltar area.
Meanwhile the three way technical meetings got underway again on Gibraltar on Wednesday. The representatives for Spain, the U.K., and Gibraltar met on the Rock at 4pm and will present their main conclusions from the meeting to the press on Thursday.
Luis Felipe Fernández de la Peña, the Director General for Europe and North America from the Foreign Ministry is the Spanish representative at the talks, while Tim Hitchens represents the British Foreign Office as the Director for Europe. The Gibraltar First Minister, Peter Caruana, is representing Gibraltar.
It’s understood the talks have centred on maritime security, the environment and tax policy.
Partido Popular national deputy, José Ignacio Landaluce, has said however that the three way talks had become a ‘self promoting tool without any real base’, adding that the results were not in the Spanish interests.
