Club Chairman, Florentino Pñerez said that Raul had done his duty as the best of the best, after those assembled watched a video which showed the career of the player since his first goal against Atlético de Madrid in the 1994/5 season, upto last goal, against Zaragoza, last season.
The player had a list of name of people not to forget, and top was Jorge Valdano, his friend and the man who ‘discovered’ him as a player.
The ex captain went up to a group of some 500 fans who had gathered on the terraces of the Bernabéu, and sent kisses into the crowd, thanking them for their support over so many years.
He said that Real Madrid had been his home and that he had enjoyed ‘unique emotions’ there. He said that he feels like a player and wanted to continue doing so while his body allowed. He said that football had been and is his life and that today is the first day of a new life.
He declined to confirm his signing for Schalke 04, although he did say there were ‘deep talks’ with the German club.
Raúl has played for Real Madrid for 18 years, 16 of them in the main team, and he can be sure he was right when he said he leaves with the ‘respect and affection of the fans’.
There has been some criticism and debate in the Spanish press that the ceremony held at the club on Monday was ‘cold’.
