The Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has said that he hopes that President Obama can accompany his wife and daughters Malia 12, and Sasha 9, who have now been confirmed to be staying at the Villa Padierna hotel in Marbella between August 4 and 8.

40 rooms have been reserved for the First Lady who is coming with a group of friends, and a trip to Mallorca to see King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía for lunch at the Marivent Palace has also been confirmed.

Speculation in Marbella about the possible attendance of the President is rife following the revelation that a birthday cake has been requested for August the fourth, the date when Barack Obama is 49, and coincidentally, the Spanish Prime Minister is 50.

However a statement from the White House on Monday said the President would not be coming, saying that it would be Michelle with her 9 year old daughter Sasha. The other daughter, 12 year old Malia will be on a summer camp. The White House confirmed the trip by Michelle Obama to visit the King and Queen at the Marivent Palace in Mallorca.

Speaking on Monday, Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, said that there was no ‘official confirmation’ of what is a ‘private visit’.

The owner of the Villa Padierna Hotel, Ricardo Arranz, has meanwhile admitted that Michelle’s visit is a gift and added it was ‘an enormous responsibility’ for businessmen and workers on the Costa del Sol.

British architect, Ed Gilbert, designed the hotel, considered to be the best in Spain.
