El Mundo has a front page photo of the President and Deputy President of Cataluña, José Montilla and Josep Lluis Carod-Rovira, laughing during the debate in the Parlament yesterday. The paper headlines ‘The animals triumph’. It says those who promoted the motion proclaim the victory for the rights of the bull, while José Montilla has said that the result is not ‘a thermometer of the relations between Cataluña and Spain’. El Mundo also shows the concerned face of the most popular Catalan matador, Serafín Martín.
El País headlines that Cataluña sticks the lace in the bulls, and notes the vote in the Catalan Parliament was 68 to 55 to ban bullfights from 2012.
The paper says the decision has heightened passions across Spain and the PP will put forward a law to avoid any more regional vetoes. El País notes that José Montilla voted against the prohibition.
La Razón superimposes the vote result over a bull’s head and has the headline ‘Death in the ring’, and notes the chamber approved the prohibition with an absolute majority. It notes too that Montilla and 30 of the 37 Catalan Socialists voted against the veto.
ACB has a photo from the parliament during the vote and headlines the nationalist farce does away with bullfighting in Cataluña. The paper says the votes does away with a Catalan tradition of nearly seven centuries, and notes that the PP wants to protect bullfighting as ‘an asset of cultural interest’.
El Mundo reports that the PP has summoned the PSOE to cancel the prohibition in Congress. They will present a proposal to protect ‘La Fiesta’ as a ‘cultural demonstration’ to which the Spaniards have the right.
La Razón says the PP will try to pass a law in Congress to delay the prohibition, while those who want to see an end to bullfighting are threatening to force votes in other regions. The paper takes a poll and concludes that 63.5% of Spaniards consider that Cataluña is now more separated from Spain.
La Razón also reports that some Arab Sheiks want to build a mosque on the site of the Monumental bullring in Barcelona.
Público has a large red ‘Olé’ on its front page and shows activists against animal abuse celebrating the result in the parliament. It notes that the PP once again are shaking the rupture of Spain. Público reports that Mariano Rajoy has compared the bulls to motorbike racing, to criticize the Catalan decision, while Jaime Mayor Oreja says the vote is revenge for the successes of the National football team and the Constitutional Court. The paper notes that Esperanza Aguirre has accused Zapatero of promoting the measure, although it was a popular initiative and most of the Catalan Socialists voted against it.

El Mundo reports that Marsans has extended its redundancy plan to affect the rest of the work force. Union UGT plans to denounce the company’s ex owner, Díaz Ferrán, for handing the business over to a ‘hitman’.
Público highlights this and says that the union will accuse him of asset stripping.

La Razón notes that cannabis is now legal on the health service, with a derivative being accepted for use against multiple sclerosis.

In international stories:
El Mundo notes that a judge has blocked the most controversial parts of the immigration law in Arizona. The paper says that fear gave way to a sensation of relief among the Hispanics of the state.
El País says the USA judiciary has blocked the controversial immigration law in Arizona. It says the cells which the Phoenix sheriff, Joe Arpaio, had prepared for the arrested immigrants will, for now, remain empty.

El Mundo tells us that Telefónica is now the first operator in Brazil after its purchase of Vivo. The paper notes it comes after three months of hard battle.
El País notes that the Spanish company paid 7.5 billion to the Portuguese PT.

El País notes that the French Government has dismantled 300 of the 600 gypsy settlements across France.

El País puts a photo of Woody Allan and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy out walking in the Paris night. The paper says the director and actress from the film ‘Midnight in Paris’ are the centre of interest, including that of the French President.

El País puts Lemaitre on its masthead. The French runner has seen his first triumph as the fastest white athlete, winning the 100m in Barcelona last night.

And finally,
El Mundo puts Raúl on its masthead, wearing the number 7 shirt for his new club Schalke 04. He has said he would love to play against Real Madrid.
