A firework rocket lit by the Mayor of Toledo, Emiliano García-Page, during the fiestas in honour of the city’s patron, Virgen del Sagrario, decapitated one of the angels on the Puerta de los Reyes of the famous cathedral.

It came after the Dean of the Cathedral, Juan Sánchez, had asked several times that the fireworks not be set off so close to the monument.

Fortunately nobody was injured by the granite angel’s head which fell a distance of some five metres from the 15th century

Meetings have already taken place to move the fireworks to a new location next year.
