The Partido Popular candidate in the Málaga town of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bobilla, has called for the Madrid Partido Popular Deputy, Juan Soler, to be punished for his comments about the Minister for Health, Trinidad Jiménez. He declared the situation to when the ex Development Minister, Magdalena Álvarez, was criticised for her accent by the Catalan PP Deputy, Montserrat Nebrera.

Jiménez is standing to be the Socialist candidate for the Madrid regional government elections next year, and Soler had derided her accent saying that it was more apt for Dos Hermanas in Sevilla or for Vélez-Málaga, and the local party in Vélez are not happy about the comments.

‘Declarations like this have no place in our democratic system’, he said, adding that they were from another time when insulting and humiliating Andalucians was commonplace.

Jiménez’s rival in the Socialist primary elections in Madrid, Pedro Gómez, has described Soler’s words as ‘xenophobic’, while the Socialist party as a whole has called for an explanation for the ‘insults’.

Juan Soler later apologised for his comments, which he said were not intended to insult anybody.
