Looking at the capitals of the country’s provinces, Murcia saw the highest temperature on Friday with 44 degrees, followed by 43 degrees in Valencia and 42 degrees in Alicante. 41 degrees were reached in Lérida and Tarragona, with 40 degrees reached in parts of the provinces of Málaga, Jaén and Granada.

Barcelona saw a new all time record of 39.8 ºC, half a degree higher than the previous record at the Fabra Observatory in the Sierra de Collserola.

The highest temperatures since 1985 lead to excess ozone and pollution levels soar in six municipalities in Murcia.

The Valencia temperatures were the highest for over 100 years.
The President of the Spanish Meteorological Agency, AEMET; Ricardo García Herrera, commented that Friday’s temperatures were ‘relatively unusual’ and would ensure that the numbers for August as a whole will make the month one of the hottest on record. He said that some of the temperatures seen in inland Andalucía were more typical of those seen in Morocco.

The rest of the weekend will see the intense heat restricted to the Canaries and Andalucía, although a reduction in the Terral wind in Málaga will see a six degree fall in temperatures on the Costa del Sol.
