Fernando Alonso’s chances of winning the Formula One World Championship seem over after the driver from Asturias spun out of the race in wet conditions at Spa on Sunday.

Starting what was a typically chaotic race from tenth on the grid, Alonso was in eight position seven laps before the end of the race when the accident happened.

‘Eighth position in Spa would have been little help to me, and I had to risk it’, he said after the race.
‘I hit the kerb and the artificial grass and lost control... We know that this type of race is like this, and everything was decided in the first lap where we lost all our options’.

Alonso was in collision with Rubens Barrichello in the first lap of the race; the impact taking out the Brazilian and forcing the Spaniard into the pits.

Despite the disappointment, the driver said he would try and recover positions in the remaining six races, claiming recovery was perfectly possible.

The race was won by Lewis Hamilton who is now top of the Drivers’ Championship with what was his third victory.

Jaime Algueruari lost a point for tenth place, after being handed down a 20 second fine after the race for a manoeuvre on the 42nd lap against Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Pedro de la Rosa crossed the line in 12 position.
