A network which sexually exploited young men has been broken up for the first time ever in Spain, and 14 arrests made.

National Police report that they think some 90 people have been drawn into the prostitution ring since 2009, most of them men, but also some women and transsexuals in their twenties who were given cocaine, poppers and Viagra and obliged to prostitute themselves 24 hours a day. 17 of the prostitutes are being held in police custody and have been told they could obtain Spanish residence in exchange for collaborating with the authorities.

They were captured in the Maranhao region of northern Brazil, where they were given plane tickets to fly to Europe, paid for by cloned credit cards, before being brought to Spain. Aged between 22 and 29, they had to hand over 50% of their takings, as well as 200 € a month for rent and keep.

The network was varied with the men forced to work in ten different premises across the country. Five of the flats were in Palma, three in Madrid, one in Barcelona and one in Torrevieja, Alicante. In León they worked in a club, ‘Brindis’.

Most of the clients were gay men aged between 20 and 65 who paid an average of 60 € for the services, and who responded to newspaper and internet contact advertising.
