The Partido Popular in Valencia has said that the latest police report on the Gürtel cases is ‘false’ and intended to influence the decision of the judges investigating the case in the Madrid High Court. A statement from the party says the report is false as it does not address the financing of the party.

The new police report links businessmen from companies linked to the Gürtel corruption allegations to the illegal financing of the Partido Popular in Valencia. One example is the claim that businessman Enrique Ortiz, who is also implicated in the Brugal case in Orihuela, paid in money to an account which was used to meet party costs.

The report, from the Money Laundering Brigade claims that there is ‘no logical explanation’ for the different companies paying money to the ‘popular’ company Orange Market. In return the PP awarded contracts to the companies ‘as a consideration for the favours realised’. The report highlights the activities of the ex Secretary General of the PP in Valencia, Ricardo Costa, ‘in obtaining funds and reducing the debt’ and says that 846,000 € was obtained in 2008.
