The Children’s Prosecutor in Alicante has warned in his annual report for 2009 that latin gangs make up ‘a problem of importance’ in the area.

The report says the problem is of particular note in the southern part of the province, and highlights the case of ‘brutal aggression and attempted murder’ of a tramp who was spending the night in a bank cash dispenser room in Alicante city in April last year. It notes that the 16 year old found guilty of setting fire to the man was given a seven year internment followed by five years of controlled release.

Europa Press reports that the Children’s Prosecutor names the ‘Latin King’ and ‘Blood’ gangs and says they are linked to smaller crimes. In 2009 there were 174 cases of robbery or theft, and 106 against sexual freedom.
