National Police explosives experts have safely diffused a 19th century bomb which was found on Thursday buried at the base of the Felipe V city walls at El Molinete in Cartagena.
Archaeologists think the bomb dates from the Cantonal War, (1873-1874) and not from the Spanish Civil War as was first thought.
It was found at 9am by archaeologists who were working to recover the remains at the El Molinete site in the historic centre of Cartagena. It is oval in shape and measures about 50cms long by 20 cms wide. It has some lead flecks on its side indicating that it had been fired from a cannon with a scratched barrel.
