The idea of introducing a 5 € toll on visitors to Gibraltar by the Partido Popular Mayor of La Linea, Alejandro Sánchez, is starting to result in a backlash against the town.

Gibraltarians are now seeing a campaign by email, SMS and on social networking sites urging them to spend ‘Not a penny in La Linea’. The message is becoming the slogan of a campaign to boycott establishments on the Spanish side of the border, and is an indication of increasing tension over the proposal.

The Mayor insists that he will move ahead with the idea, and has already started to construct the tool booths needed with the intention of starting to make the charge in the Pilar Bank Holiday Weekend in October.

The Ministry for Development in Madrid is reportedly looking for a legal way to block the toll.

Peter Caruana, Gibraltar First Minister, has said that the Mayor of La Linea cannot be a friend and at the same time harass visitors to the rock, and has described the toll as ‘unacceptable’. Many Gibraltarians are reported to think that La Linea is bankrupt because of corruption, and that they will not be used as pawns in his battles with Madrid.

Spanish workers on the rock, who would be exempt from the charge, have nevertheless attacked it, claiming that it could result in job losses.
