The largest fire of the summer has been brought under control in Galicia. The blaze at Laza, Ourense, has destroyed 1,715 hectares of land, 1691 of scrub and 24 of trees.
37 fire crews, 15 fire engines, 14 fire-fighting planes and 16 helicopters have been fighting the flames and were helped considerably by rain on Wednesday.
Defence Minister, Carme Chacón, has visited the area to see how the Military Emergency Unit has been helping in the fight. She said that Spain suffered from a ‘cancer’ of ‘malnacidos’ who continued to start fires deliberately, aware that forest fires ‘not only destroy the environment, but can also kill humans’.
She had words of sympathy for the families of two fire-fighters who lost their lives in another blaze this August in Fornelos de Montes, for which a 62 year old man has been arrested.
