Tragedy has hit the Vuelta de España cycle race and the British Sky team.
The 43 year old Spanish masseur, Txema González, died in hospital in Sevilla on Friday, victim to a blood infection, according to the Sky team.
Originally from Alava, the masseur was admitted to hospital after catching a virus which hit the Sky team at the start of the race last week, but a statement from the team denied that his death was related to the virus which has led to three cyclists, Juan Antonio Flecha, John Lee Augustyn and Ben Swift, to abandon the race.
Race doctors have said that without more information the main hypothesis is that the origin of the fatal bacterial infection came from an alimentary germ.
The Sky team has announced it is abandoning the race following the tragedy. All the remaining teams decided to donate their prize money from Saturday to the victim’s family.
