Two people have been killed, and 13 were injured when a passenger train was in collision with a dumper truck in the town of Carmonita, near Mérida, Badajoz at 12,35pm today, Monday.
The two fatalities were the male driver of the dumper truck who was working on the construction of the new Madrid- Lisbon AVE high speed train line nearby, and a woman passenger on the train.
Development Minister, José Blanco, travelled to the scene of the accident on hearing the news.
Of the 13 other people injured, the train driver is reported to be seriously hurt, and was taken by helicopter to the Mérida Hospital. Five of the remaining 12 injured were treated at the scene, while seven were taken to hospitals in Cáceres and Mérida.
There were only 15 passengers in total on the train, two of them escaped without injury.
