The Spanish National Football Team has been named today, Tuesday, as the winners of this year’s Prince of Asturias Award for Sport. The choice was an open secret ever since the side, led by trainer Vicente Del Bosque, won the World Cup.
Del Bosque, and several players including Captain Iker Casillas and Xabi Alonso have agreed that they will be proud to accept the honour. The news will be a further boost to the team ahead of their friendly against Argentina which kicks off at 2200 CET.
The majority of the jury, made up of 30 people, are reported to have backed the side, with Alpine climber, Edurne Pasaban coming in second place.
The award will be presented by the Prince in Oviedo in October.
The last five years winners of the Sports award were:-
2005 Fernando Alonso Fórmula 1
2006 Spanish Basketball Team
2007 Michael Schumacher
2008 Rafael Nadal
2009 Yelena Isinbayeva (Pole vaulter)
