The Contentious Administrative Court in Algeciras ruled on Wednesday to provisionally suspend the decision of the Town Hall in La Línea de la Concepción to redirect the traffic close to the frontier with Gibraltar. The decision means the effective halt to the municipal project to charge a 5 € toll for access to Gibraltar.
The Town Hall has already erected two traffic signs which direct all traffic for the Rock into a single lane, ahead of the collection of the toll, and the court decision implies the removal of the two signs which will mean a return to direct access from La Linea to Gibraltar.
But despite Wednesday’s court order, a statement from the La Linea Town Hall said that they will continue with the process to introduce the ‘congestion charge’. Partido Popular Mayor, Alejandro Sánchez, is determined to press ahead with the toll, despite opposition also from the Ministry for Development in Madrid which is also challenging the validity of the traffic signs erected already to divert the traffic.
To that a municipal source said that they ‘did not want to start a judicial spectacle with the Government of the Nation over a traffic sign to the joy of the Governments of Gibraltar and the U.K.’. The Town Hall considers the challenge is a clear decision in the benefit of Gibraltar.
‘It is incredible once again that the Government is favouring the interests of the English and the Caruana Government, to whom it is absolutely devoted’.
